2022 Engineer Promotional Testing

The Engineer position is a great step for our department and a career step for those qualified, looking to advance.  The first Engineers testing will take place on the week of March 21, 2022. This test will establish a list of eligible candidates to establish the first 6 career Engineer positions for JHFEMS. If there are eligible candidates beyond the 6 filled positions, this test will create an Engineer promotional list that will be kept for one year.

For the purpose of the June 5, 2022 bid, Engineers will bid based upon rank on the promotional list.  Engineer will be its own category in Section IV of the Operational Shift Personnel Guidelines.  Future Engineer position bids will be based on the date of promotion.

Minimum Qualifications

Since this is a promotional testing opportunity and not a hiring opportunity, only full-time Ops Staff will be considered. 

Candidates must have at least 3 years of experience in the Fire Service.

Candidates must be Wyoming ADO-P certified, with the ability to obtain Wyoming ADO-A within 2 years or first available opportunity with the department.  If the candidate does not have ADO-A certification, a Truck 16 task book must be initiated prior to testing.

Candidates must have a Wyoming Class-B license, or equivalent.

Scoring

Candidates will be ranked by composite score. The composite score is the sum of the points obtained by an individual in each examination component. Maximum composite score is 100 points. After the final scores the chief will conduct a personal interview with each candidate. Additional factors such as leadership, attitude and fit for the position will be considered.

Written Test Preparation

Test will be 100 Multiple Choice Questions.

Questions will come from IFSTA Pumping and Aerial Apparatus Driver/Operator Handbook 3rd Edition, 2017 Wyoming CDL Manual, JHFEMS Equipment/Apparatus knowledge and JHFEMS Policies and Procedures.

Pumping Scenario Preparation

A pumping scenario will be chosen from the following 3 possible scenarios:

  • Produce 2 Effective Handlines, with a transition from tank water to hydrant supply
  • Pump a Supply Line from a Draft Source (multiple port-a-tanks)
  • Produce Effective Master Stream and Supply an FDC, with a transition from tank water to hydrant supply
