AUGUST: Preparing with Pets

Your pets are important members of your family, so make sure to include them in your emergency preparedness efforts. If you plan and practice now, you will encounter less difficulty, stress, and worry when you need to make quick decisions during an emergency.

Take Action

• Consider your pets when developing your family evacuation plan and disaster kit.
• Arrange for someone you trust to take your pets in case you’re not home during an emergency.
• Make sure your pet is identifiable with a microchip and up-to-date collars and tags.

Tip

If it’s not safe for you to stay in your home during an emergency, it’s not safe for your pets either. If you leave your pets behind during an evacuation, they may end up lost, injured, or worse.
